Joining the Society of Mediators

MEMBERSHIP HELPS US DELIVER THE OBJECTIVES

Membership of the Society of Mediators is open to all Mediators as well as Student or Prospective Mediators. We welcome members with the ethos, and standards and norms of the Society.

Those who meet the additional criteria may also apply for Fellowship of the society.

SoM Membership

Membership of the Society of Mediators is open to all Mediators as well as Student or Prospective Mediators

Membership Costs just £50 + VAT pa and provides an increased (for 2021) set of ten unique benefits:

  1. Use of post-nominal MSOM for those that have completed their accredited mediation training and meet the below criteria.
  2. Membership of the Society’s Mediator Panel with priority access to work subject to the below criteria.
    (Those trained by the Society will be included in the list* of Alumni Mediators as well as Member Mediators).
  3. Monthly newsletter and details of events and offers.
  4. Invitation to the AGM.
  5. Support, mentoring, and guidance from experienced Mediators (working hours service).
  6. Membership of the Free Mediation Project – providing free mediation and observation opportunities
    (suspended during COVID).
  7. Access to ‘Pathway to Professionalism’ programme leading to Fellowship (FSoM) of the Society
    (suspended during COVID).
  8. Guidance in the event of ethical issues available by email or telephone (members only, 0800 to 2000).
  9. Complaints Resolution Service
    (accessible to members only, for free).
  10. 25% reduction on room hires for meetings, mediation, or personal use.

For the avoidance of doubt, this list will currently be held by the Society with a future plan to create online profiles for each Alumni and Member mediator. 

SoM Fellowship

Fellowship requires a one off fee of £200 + VAT, requirements include:

  • CMC recognised mediation qualification.
  • Observing three qualifying mediations.
  • Being appropriately insured.
  • Beginning and keeping a reflective diary.
  • Undertaking minimum of 10 mediations.
  • At least 5 to be pro-bono mediations.
  • Attending an Advanced Course (12 hrs).
  • Completing annual CPD training (6 hrs).
  • Writing a 2,000 word mediation paper.
  • Satisfying a panel of sufficient merit.
  • Includes all the benefits of membership plus the use of the post-nominal FSoM as a mark of competence, experience, knowledge, and commitment.

Som Membership Criteria

Alumni of the SOM 40 hour training course

  • immediate eligibility
  • must complete three observations within one year of their course (unless an extension is granted for extenuating circumstances)
    #          one observation may be a SOM professional demonstration
    #          two observations must be of a live mediation of at least an hour’s duration
    (whether in-person or by Zoom/remote technology)
  • must be up to date for annual CPD
    ie: 6 hours mediation  CPD beginning in the calendar year after the course
  • must have appropriate indemnity insurance 
  • must have a complaints policy 

Those who have passed other CMC Recognised 40 hour courses

  • must complete three observations within one year of their course
    (unless an extension is granted for extenuating circumstances)
    #          one observation may be a SOM professional demonstration
    #          two observations must be of a live mediation of at least an hour’s duration
    (whether in-person or by Zoom/remote technology)
  • must be up to date for annual CPD and must complete a SOM CPD or other SOM course of at least one day in the first year of membership.
    ie: 6 hours mediation  CPD beginning in the calendar year after the course
  • must have appropriate indemnity insurance 
  • must have a complaints policy 

Those who have been mediating for at least five years but do not meet the above criteria

  • must have completed as lead or co-mediator at least 2 mediations a year for five years
  • must produce a record of those mediations
  • must have £1million of PI insurance
  • must be up to date for annual CPD
  • must complete a SOM CPD or other SOM course of at least one day
  • must have appropriate indemnity insurance 
  • must have a complaints policy
